Geographic Information Services | API – Terms of Use

1. API Purpose

This API provides programmatic access to determine the Minnesota House, Senate, and Congressional members representing a geographic point, based on latitude and longitude. It returns district information and member details in GeoJSON format.

2. Permitted Use

You may use this API to:

  • Integrate legislative district lookup into public websites, apps, or internal tools.
  • Display legislative district or member information to users.
  • Support civic engagement and transparency by helping users find their representatives.

3. Restrictions

You may not:

  • Use the API for bulk data scraping or commercial resale.
  • Misrepresent or alter the returned data to imply endorsement or official status.
  • Use the API to infer personal data beyond what is publicly available.
  • Interfere with or overload the API service.

If you require bulk data, please contact us for an official data extract.

4. Rate Limits and Access Control

We reserve the right to enforce rate limits to ensure stable performance for all users. If you expect high-volume usage or would like to request a dedicated key, please contact chris.cantey@lcc.mn.gov.

5. Attribution

If you use this API publicly, attribution is appreciated:

“Legislative district data provided by the Minnesota Legislative Coordinating Commission.”

6. Disclaimer

The Legislative Coordinating Commission (LCC) provides this API “as is” without warranties of any kind. While we aim for accuracy and availability, we make no guarantees regarding uptime, data completeness, or correctness. Use of this API is at your own risk.

7. Modifications and Termination

We may change, suspend, or discontinue access to the API at any time. Changes to these Terms will be posted here with a new effective date.
